What is “The Open”? by Coach Cherise

I distinctly recall my first year participating in CrossFit at Connex and just about this time of year the veteran members were all geeked about The Open. The what? The CrossFit Open! Clueless and unable to ask questions… I just continued to show up for my workouts. I paid no attention to Regionals or The CrossFit Games. Well now I do know and I’d like you to know and understand as a Connex athlete what The Open means for you…

The simplest way to explain it is the CrossFit Open is regular season for all CrossFit athletes. Regionals are the playoffs and The CrossFit Games is our Superbowl, our Olympics, our Fittest in the World. You have an opportunity in front of you to participate in the CrossFit sport as an athlete, regardless of your age or ability. For 5 weeks, every Thursday evening the Open workout will be announced (18.1, 18.2, 18.3, etc). Connex will program these workouts for all members to complete on Friday and your workout will be judged by another member/coach if you sign up for the Open. If you sign up for the Open, you log your score/time (just like on the white board) into the CrossFit Games site. You can see where you stand against hundreds of thousands of fellow CrossFitters from all around the world.

Workouts are programmed for Rx, Scaled, and Masters (35-60+). In some cases, you can measure your performance against others in your occupation (ex: student, doctor, teacher, firefighter, military, etc). You can measure your fitness against people in your age group, in your state, in your region… or against the entire world! Registration will cost you $20 for The Open. Then July/August will roll back around and the fittest athletes from around the world will come compete right here in our backyard.
