July Nutrition Challenge Tip of the Day:
Grocery shopping is a big factor in how well you eat. The aisles at the super market are packed with choices, not only in food variety but in brands and flavors, making our selections that much trickier. One tip for keeping overly processed, packaged foods out of your cart is to stick to the perimeter of the store. Your typical market is laid out so that the fresh, perishable foods line the outer walls of the market, while a maze of aisles in the middle contains the sugary, “fake” food products. Fill your cart mostly from the produce sections, with fresh fruits and vegetables. Head to the meat counter for the freshest catch and the highest quality cuts of meat. Stop at the bulk foods section to load up on raw nuts and seeds, dried unsweetened fruits, or some fresh-ground, nothing-added nut butters (your mileage may vary, depends on your store) instead of buying their packaged alternatives.
