July Athlete Spotlight, Thursday Rest Day

July Athlete Spotlight!
Congrats Amber K.!!!

Cooking, riding my beach cruiser, going to the beach, traveling, watching sports, playing catch and walking our Labradoodle, Buster.

What motto or phrase do you live by?

Find A Way… You Got To Believe!

It’s My Grandpa’s motto and it’s really stuck with me. He had it on his license plate FINDAWY, and I had it plastered across t-shirts and coins growing up.

What is something we might not know about you?

I don’t have a gallbladder anymore.

What is your favorite music to listen to while WODing?

Anything loud and angry with a good beat.

What recent adventure are you planning?

I think everyone knows this by now, but my wedding! My fiancé Brian and I are getting 1653512_10206642977209019_8807953854944745475_nmarried in the Senate Parlor room at the State Capitol and having our reception in the Gehl Club at Miller Park in September. Then honeymooning in Aruba!

Do any of your family members CrossFit?  If so, where?

I don’t think so… If someone does and they read this they better let me know so I can WOD with them!

Where are you originally from?

I grew up in Danville, CA. It’s a suburb of San Francisco.

What is your occupation?

Human Resources Generalist

What is your athletic background?

I played softball from 2nd grade until my junior year in high school. I pitched and played third, first and outfield. In middle school and high school I played year round on traveling teams. I had a gallstone pancreatitis attack on the field my junior year and stopped playing. I’ve dabbled with weight lifting since then.

How long have you been with CrossFit Connex?

Just finished my 3rd month!

WODs with burpees and lots of running.

What is your favorite lift?

Cleans and back squats

What is your least favorite lift?

Right now, Overhead Squats and Snatches. I’m not confident with my form but hope to change this.

Green smoothies and bacon

What is your favorite cheat Food(s)?

Wood fired pizza and frozen custard
What would your perfect WOD look like?

21-15-9, power cleans, pull-ups and some rowing

What is one thing you have done at CFC that you never thought you would do?

I was really nervous the first Saturday WOD when a 1-mile run was our warm-up, but I made it running the whole way and that was HUGE for me. I’ve always known I am strong, but actually being able to put numbers to my strength and accomplishing the WODs day after day feels awesome.

What motivates you during a CrossFit WOD?DSC_0036

The coaches! Especially Emily who never fails to keep me motivated and give me that boost when I need it.  All my Connex teammates and fellow strong ladies that remind me it’s ok to be strong. Nothing beats those familiar voices in my ear when I feel that I don’t have much left.

What do you eat pre/post WOD?

Pre: Bananas

Post: Meat and Veggies

What results have you seen so far in coming to CFC?

My normal clothes are falling off! The combination of weight loss and muscle gaining/toning has been exciting to see. I’m also more confident and overall just happier with more energy. It works!

What was your main reason for joining CFC?

I’ve always wanted to do Crossfit since I first heard about it, but for different reasons I never joined. Brian gave me a Groupon for Christmas and after we got engaged and set our wedding date, I figured it was time. I wanted to feel better before going dress shopping and I was ready to start making some healthy habits and do something good for myself.

Give us some insight as to your thoughts after your first workout at CrossFit Connex?

Holy cow! I hadn’t worked that hard in a long time, if not ever before! Then I wanted more and to feel that high again and again…

Tell us a little about then VS now in regard to your performances as a CrossFit athlete

The running, burpees and endurance stuff was really hard for me at the beginning. I found myself out of breath a lot. Now it’s slowly but surely getting more manageable and I’m learning how to breathe better to control that feeling. Just last night I went running with my dog by choice and it was actually kind of fun.

unnamedDo you have any special or successful CrossFit Connex memories/moments?

Moving from ring rows to the bands for pull-ups. Completing that first 1-mile warm-up (Thanks Kevin and Christian for staying back from the group and keeping pace with me!) And every time I lift more than I thought I could makes me feel fantastic.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Connex?

Let yourself drink the Kool Aid! Keep coming and when you think you have nothing left to give, push harder. Find A Way!

What sort of life changes have you experienced because of CrossFit that you didn’t expect?

Like I said before, I’m happier and have more confidence. It feels really good to embrace my strength and want even more. I’ve already accomplished so much in 3 months I can’t wait to see what happens in 6 months or a year.

What does CrossFit mean to you?

Family, Strength, Community and Support.
